Winter has settled in and is here to stay. A layer of snow blankets everything as icicles grow outside our windows. The pigs and chickens are all tucked in and staying warm. Both deciding they would rather stay in then deal with the snow and the cold.
As we all turn inward and shelter from the cold weather as much as we would like to take this time and hibernate there is a lot going on inwardly on the farm. Seed books have been ordered and next years plots are being marked out and where we would like to grow what. Picking out and planning on our next group of chickens as well and what and how many. So yes there will be fresh eggs again soon. I had to buy eggs for the first time in 3 years. The vet is on his way today to check out the pigs and also lend his advise in starting to grow our herd and starting a breeding program here so there will be pork for years to come.
With all of the plotting and planing we are also still creating as well. Because I just cant help myself and what better time of year to create while hunkered down indoors away from the bitter wind, and boy does it whip around this farm. We have harvested for the first time from my citronella plant and produced a nice amount of oil. Which I am thinking about dabbling into candle making. What a great way to ward off mosquitoes this summer then by lighting a candle? Oh and I made my first wreath...which was a learning curve and experience but it was fun to use the bows that we trimmed off of our Christmas tree. And yes we finally have a Christmas tree, we chose one off of the property and it definitely has that feel and look but it is nice. One of the beauties of a farm is that for the most part it will provide as long as you are willing to work, adapt and be a little crafty with things.
So for winter we will be inwardly plotting and planning and enjoying the internal focus until spring and everything starts blossoming. The roots are doing the work underground for now.
